 A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A RAILWAY PORTER

     There are many railway porters at the railway stations, where many trains arrive and depart from. जेथे अनेक रेल्वे गाड्या ये जा करतात त्या रेल्वे स्थानकावर अनेक रेल्वे हमाल असतात. A railway porter is seen wearing his red shirt and turban at railway stations. रेल्वे स्टेशनवर रेल्वे हमाल लाल शर्ट आणि पगडी घातलेला दिसतो. A brass plate bearing his number is tied to his arm. त्याच्या हाताला पितळीचा बिल्ला बांधलेला असतो.

     As soon as we reach the station, a porter approaches us asking if we need help carrying our heavy luggage to the platform. स्टेशनवर पोहोचताच एक कुली आमचे जड सामान प्लॅटफॉर्मवर नेण्यासाठी आमच्याकडे येतो. If we are doubtful about getting a good seat in the train, he reassures us at once. आम्हाला ट्रेनमध्ये चांगली सीट मिळण्याबाबत अडचण आली तर तो लगेच आम्हाला धीर/खात्री देतो. He not only carries our luggage to the compartment but also procures a good seat for us. तो आमचं सामान डब्यातच घेऊन जात नाही तर आमच्यासाठी चांगली सीटही मिळवून देतो. If we have reserved seats, he takes us and our luggage straight to those seats. जर आमच्या जागा आधीच आरक्षित असतील तर तो आम्हाला आणि आमचे सामान थेट त्या सीटसच्या इथे घेऊन जातो.

     It is always good to travel light but we pay scant attention to this point and often travel with heavy luggage. हलक्या सामानासह प्रवास करणे केव्हाही चांगले असते, परंतु आम्ही याकडे फारसे लक्ष देत नाही आणि अनेकदा जड सामान घेऊन प्रवास करतो. In such cases, a porter is very useful. अशा परिस्थितीत हमाल खूप उपयुक्त ठरतो. Before we allow him to carry our luggage, we want to know his charges. आम्ही त्याला आमचे सामान नेण्यास परवानगी देण्यापूर्वी, आम्ही त्याचे दर जाणून घेतो. However, he tells us to pay whatever we think reasonable. पण तो आम्हाला वाजवी वाटेल तेवढे पैसे देण्यास सांगतो.

     When there are no trains on the platforms, he is idle. जेव्हा प्लॅटफॉर्मवर गाड्या नसतात तेव्हा तो निष्क्रिय असतो. He sleeps on the bench. तो बाकावर झोपतो. Sometimes, he  plays cards with other porters. कधीकधी तो इतर हमालांसोबत पत्ते खेळतो. He has to do the hard work of carrying heavy loads. भारी सामान वाहून नेण्याचे कष्ट त्याला करावे लागतात.
