TENSES IN CONDITIONALS - 3

Conditional sentences have two parts:

1. If-clause

2. Main clause

In the sentence - If you walk fast, you will get there in time.

If you walk fast is the if-clause

and you will get there in time is the Main Clause.

There are three kinds of conditionals.

Each kind contains a different tense pattern and expresses a different shade of meaning.

Type 3 ➡️ Unfulfilled condition ▶️

The Past Perfect is used in the if-clause and would/should/could/might + had + past participle(third form of the verb - Verb 3) is used in the Main Clause.

Examples:

1. If I had gone to the flower market early in the morning, I would get fresh flowers.

2. If you had studied hard, you would have got first class.

🔸This type of conditional indicates that something did not happen because a certain condition was not fulfilled.

🔸If I had gone to the flower market early in the morning means that I didn't go to the flower market early in the morning and therefore I didn't get fresh flowers.

🔸If you had studied hard means that he/she didn't work hard and therefore he/she didn't get first class.
