 Steps to Frame 'WH'-Questions'

1. Identify the underlined part of the sentence (the answer).

2. Choose the correct WH-word based on the answer:

Who → person

Whom → object of a verb or preposition (person)

Whose → possession

What → thing, idea, or action

Which → choice or option

Where → place

When → time

Why → reason

How → manner, way, or method

How many / How much → quantity or amount

How long → duration or time

How often → frequency

How far → distance

How old → age

How come → reason or surprise (informal)

3. Choose the correct helping verb according to tense and subject:

Present Simple → do / does

Past Simple → did

Future Simple → will / shall

Present Continuous → am / is / are

Past Continuous → was / were

Present Perfect → have / has

Past Perfect → had

Modal verbs → can / could / may / might / must should / would / etc.

4. Place the WH-word at the beginning of the sentence.

5. Use the helping verb after the WH-word if required.

6. Follow with the subject and main verb to complete the question.

7. Check that the underlined part fits naturally as the answer.
