How to Arrange Words in Alphabetical Order

Alphabetical order means arranging words according to the order of the letters in the English alphabet: A, B, C, D ….. Z.

1. If the first letters are different

Compare the first letters of the words. Arrange them according to their position in the alphabet.

Example:

 Words: Dog, Apple, Cat, Ball

• Apple

• Ball

• Cat

• Dog

Answer: Apple → Ball → Cat → Dog

2. If the first letters are the same

Compare the second letters.

Example:

 Words: Bat, Bed, Big, Box

All the words begin with B. So, compare the second letters:

• Bat

• Bed

• Big

• Box

The second letters are a, e, i, o.

Since a → e → i → o:

Answer: Bat → Bed → Big → Box

3. If the first two letters are the same

Compare the third letters.

Example:

Words: Can, Cap, Carrot, Cat

All the words begin with Ca. So, compare the third letters:

• Can

• Cap

• Carrot

• Cat

The third letters are n, p, r, t.

Since n → p → r → t:

Answer: Can → Cap → Carrot → Cat

4. If the first three letters are the same

Compare the fourth letters. If the fourth letters are also the same, compare the fifth letters, and continue comparing one letter at a time until you find a difference.

Example:

 Words: Plane, Planet, Plant, Plate

All four words begin with Pla.

First, compare the fourth letters:

• Plane

• Planet

• Plant

• Plate

The first three words have n as their fourth letter, while Plate has t. Because n comes before t, Plane, Planet, and Plant come before Plate.

Now compare the three words that begin with Plan:

• Plane → P l a n e

• Planet → P l a n e t

• Plant → P l a n t

The fifth letters of Plane and Planet are both e, but Plant has t as its fifth letter. Since e comes before t, Plane and Planet come before Plant.

Next, compare Plane and Planet:

• Plane ends after the letters P-l-a-n-e.

• Planet begins with the same five letters, P-l-a-n-e, and then has one more letter, t.

When one word is a complete beginning of another word, the shorter word comes first.

Therefore:

Correct alphabetical order:

Plane → Planet → Plant → Plate

Important Rule

When arranging words alphabetically, compare the letters from left to right.

Remember:

1st letter → 2nd letter → 3rd letter → 4th letter → 5th letter → and so on.

Stop comparing as soon as you find a letter that is different.

If one word ends while all its letters match the beginning of another word, the shorter word comes first.

Always arrange words from A to Z.
