Was is a form of the verb be. It is the past tense of am and is. We use was with I, he, she, it, and singular nouns.
1. To show a past state or conditionI was tired. मी थकलो/थकले होतो/होते.
She was happy. ती आनंदी होती.
He was sick. तो आजारी होता.
2. To show identity or profession in the past
He was a teacher. तो शिक्षक होता.
She was a dentist. ती दंतवैद्य होती.
I was a student. मी विद्यार्थी होतो/होते.
3. To describe someone or something in the past
The movie was interesting. चित्रपट मनोरंजक होता.
The room was clean. खोली स्वच्छ होती.
The food was delicious. जेवण स्वादिष्ट होते.
4. To show a past location
I was at home. मी घरी होतो/होते.
She was at school. ती शाळेत होती.
He was in the classroom. तो वर्गात होता.
5. To talk about an action happening at a particular time in the past
Here was + verb-ing forms the past continuous tense.
I was reading a book. मी पुस्तक वाचत होतो/होते.
She was cooking dinner. ती रात्रीचे जेवण बनवत होती.
He was playing cricket. तो क्रिकेट खेळत होता.
6. To describe a past situation
It was raining. पाऊस पडत होता.
The road was crowded. रस्ता गर्दीने भरलेला होता.
7. In the passive voice
was + past participle (V3)
The door was closed. दरवाजा बंद करण्यात आला होता / बंद होता.
The letter was written by Riya. पत्र रियाने लिहिले होते.
The cake was prepared by my mother. केक माझ्या आईने तयार केला होता.
8. To talk about something that happened or existed in the past
There was a tree here. येथे एक झाड होते.
There was a problem. एक समस्या होती.
There was a school near my house. माझ्या घराजवळ एक शाळा होती.

Was he at home? - तो घरी होता का?
Was she happy? - ती आनंदी होती का?
Was it difficult? - ते कठीण होते का?
10. In negative sentences
was not = wasn't
I was not tired. मी थकलेलो/थकलेली नव्हतो/नव्हते.
She wasn't absent. ती गैरहजर नव्हती.
He wasn't at home. तो घरी नव्हता.
11. With there to show that something existed
There was a book on the table. टेबलवर एक पुस्तक होते.
There was a long queue. एक लांब रांग होती.
12. In If sentences for unreal or imaginary situations
If I was you, I would study harder.

For formal or standard English, use were rather than was in this expression.
