Figures of speech are commonly used in poetry to enhance the beauty, imagery, poetic effect and rhyme scheme of the poem.
HYPERBOLE
When a statement is exaggerated or overstated for effect, the figure of speech is hyperbole.
Examples:
1. No one could have run faster than he!
There must have been a thousand birds in the orchard.
2. I have a million problems.
3. We won a tone of cash.
4. I will die if I don't finish this task.
5. He rode faster than the wind.
6. I have never seen anyone so brave.
7. The world would sleep if things were run by men who say "It can't be done".
8. Romil wept an ocean of tears.
The fact that Romil wept bitterly is exaggerated by the use of the expression 'ocean of tears.
