THE CLEVER ARTIST

There was an artist who was good at painting portraits. Once he painted a portrait of a very wealthy lady. He hoped that the lady would pay him handsomely for it.

But the lady was whimsical. When she came to see the portrait, she brought her pet dog with her. She was extremely fond of that dog. She thought it was the cleverest little animal in the world.

She showed the painting to the dog. "Look, Pudding, she said, there's your darling  mistress." But the dog showed no interest in the portrait.

The lady turned to the artist. "I cannot buy the portrait, " she said, "It is not like me at all, otherwise my dog would have recognized me."

The artist was puzzled. He realized that the lady was rather foolish. But he did not want to lose a good customer.  "I shall make the necessary changes," he said. "Please come again tomorrow."

The next day the lady came again with the dog. The dog immediately ran to the portrait and began sniffing at it and licking it fondly.

The lady was pleased, "How wonderful!" she exclaimed. "You are certainly a great artist. I shall pay you whatever you ask for it."

The artist asked for a big amount and the lady paid him willingly. The artist had a hearty laugh after she had left. He had rubbed the painting with a juicy piece of meat. Its smell had attracted the dog.
