A NEWSPAPER REPORT ABOUT A TRAFFIC JAM

A newspaper report about a traffic jam, in which you and other commuters were trapped for hours together.

Bumper-to-bumper Traffic Snarl at Mulund

20 February 2024

On Monday, 19 February, an AC Volvo intercity bus had a breakdown in Mulund on Eastern Express Highway around 8:00 pm. This led to a bumper-to-bumper traffic jam. There was no traffic police around and the jam became an impenetrable maze within half an hour. Thousands of commuters traveling în cars, auto rickshaws, cabs, buses, tempos, trucks and 2-wheelers, were caught unaware because they found themselves trapped in the maze for a couple of hours. I was also stuck in my car.

As more and more vehicles joined in the snarl, the traffic came to a standstill. Soon frustration of the commuters gave rise to anger. They came down from their vehicles and began to control the traffic in frenzy. This led to further confusion. Not a single vehicle could move any longer in any direction. Heated talks gave rise to fisticuffs.

Everyone was eager to know what led to the sudden traffic jam. Meanwhile, a handful of energetic youngsters jumped into the scene and reached the place where the bus was standing still.

They immediately called for bus mechanics and regulated the flow of traffic in a sensible manner. As a result, the bottleneck was cleared and the vehicles began to pass slowly. By the time it was 9:30 pm, the traffic jam eased out.

Meanwhile, the traffic police arrived and facilitated the smooth flow of the vehicles. There was change of duty and hence the reason were not around. While the underlying cause of the jam might have been a bottleneck created due to a vehicle breakdown, there has been a phenomenal rise in the number of cars on the roads in the past few years. This has led to frequent traffic snarls these days, observed the traffic police on duty.
