MY FIRST DAY IN JUNIOR COLLEGE
How can I ever forget the day when I first walked into my junior college? It was the first of August. The rush for admissions was over, and I was happy because I had managed to get admission into a reputed college. As it was the first day, I had dressed well for the occasion. I was excited, and my heart was beating fast.
When I reached the college gate, I saw many students hanging out there. Some of them whistled, while some jeered at me. I wondered why they were doing so. I was embarrassed, but I ignored them and passed by hurriedly. I stood in the corridor of the imposing building and looked around. For a moment, I felt completely lost and frightened. Then I saw the noticeboard. It had the information about my class and roll number.
I entered the classroom and felt relieved to see a few familiar faces, some were from my school and some from my locality. I took a seat next to Triva, who lived near my house. We began speaking in whispers to each other. I asked Triva the reason for the ridicule I had suffered near the college gate. She told that those were senior students and that they knew I was a “fresher”. She told me not to worry as they did this to all newcomers.
The bell rang and a lecturer entered our class. We stood up and wished her good morning. She asked us to sit down and introduced herself. She welcomed us, and then gave us some information about the college and the subject she was to teach. As it was the first day, there were no lectures. Along with some others I walked around in the college premises. We found out the locations of various rooms, such as the college office, Principal's room, staff room, library, laboratory and gymkhana.
When I first entered the college that morning, I was shy and diffident. But when I left, I was bolder and more confident. Every single detail of that first day is still fresh in my mind.
