PREPOSITIONS OF PLACE

We use at and in to say where something or somebody is. But we use them in different contexts. At is used when we talk about a position or point.

in is used to talk about something big enough to be all around a person.

Vibha was at the bus stop.

Aruna was in the garden.

Roma was standing in the street.

Nayana was standing at the end of the street.

In is used with the names of Countries, States and Districts.

in France, in Tamilnadu, in Sindhudurg district.

In is also used with the names of Cities, towns and villages when we are thinking of them as places having length and breadth; but at is used in such cases when we are thinking of the city, town or village merely as a position or a point (during a journey)

My friend lives in Kankavli.

The train stopped at Kankavli station for half an hour.

We stayed in Delhi for five days.

Our plane stopped at Delhi airport on it's way to Chennai.

We often use at with a building when we thinking of the activity that happens there; we use in with building or other large space when we regard it as having a certain size.

We were at the cinema theatre. (watching the movie)

It was dark in the cinema theatre. (inside the theatre)

In is used with the names of roads and streets

in M P Road, in Keshav Street

At is used with addresses (with the house number)

He lives at 50 Mahatma Gandhi Road
