Last Friday was the election day. गेल्या शुक्रवारी निवडणुक होती. It was the election for the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly. महाराष्ट्र विधानसभेची निवडणूक होती. Every citizen above 18 years of age is eligible to vote. १८ वर्षांवरील प्रत्येक नागरिक मतदानासाठी पात्र असतो.
Schools and colleges were closed on that day. त्या दिवशी शाळा आणि महाविद्यालये बंद होती. This year I got right to vote. यंदा मला मतदानाचा हक्क मिळाला. I was eligible to vote. मी मतदान करण्यास पात्र होतो. So I accompanied my father and mother to a polling booth where we were to cast our votes. म्हणून मी जिथे आम्हाला मतदान करायचे होते तिथे माझ्या आईवडीलांसोबत मतदान केंद्रावर गेलो.
There were long queues of voters at these polling centres. मतदान केंद्रांवर मतदारांच्या लांबच लांब रांगा लागल्या होत्या. I saw men and women, the educated and the uneducated, the old and the young, all standing there to exercise their right to vote. मी पुरुष आणि स्त्रिया, सुशिक्षित आणि अशिक्षित, वृद्ध आणि तरुण, सर्व मतदानाचा हक्क बजावण्यासाठी उभे असलेले पाहिले.
Voting began exactly at 6.30 am. सकाळी 6.30 वाजता मतदानाला सुरुवात झाली. One by one the voters entered the polling booth. एकामागून एक मतदार मतदान केंद्रात दाखल झाले. We too stood in the queue. आम्हीही रांगेत उभे राहिलो. First my father went inside the booth to cast his vote. प्रथम माझे वडील मतदान करण्यासाठी बूथच्या आत गेले. When he came out he explained to me the voting procedure. बाहेर आल्यावर त्यांनी मला मतदानाची प्रक्रिया समजावून सांगितली. Then my mother went inside the booth to cast her vote. नंतर माझी आई मतदान करण्यासाठी बूथच्या आत गेली. Then I went inside and cast my vote. त्यानंतर मी आत जाऊन मतदान केले. My parents went home but I stayed there with my friends. माझे आईवडील घरी गेले पण मी माझ्या मित्रांसोबत तिथेच राहिलो.
Voting was brisk during the morning hours. सकाळपासूनच मतदानाला वेग आला होता. Still workers and volunteers of political parties were going from house to house requesting the voters to go and cast their votes. तरीही राजकीय पक्षांचे कार्यकर्ते व स्वयंसेवक घरोघरी जाऊन मतदारांना मतदानाला जायची विनंती करत होते. And as the closing time drew near there was indeed a heavy rush of voters at the polling stations. आणि जसजशी शेवटची वेळ जवळ येऊ लागली तसतशी मतदान केंद्रांवर मतदारांची मोठी गर्दी झाली होती.
I was impressed by the enthusiasm of the voters. मतदारांचा उत्साह पाहून मी प्रभावित झालो. A 95 years old lady came to cast her vote with her family. एक 95 वर्षांची वृद्ध महिला आपल्या कुटुंबासह मतदान करण्यासाठी आली होती. Even the blind voters also came to cast their votes. अगदी अंध मतदारही मतदानासाठी आले होते. They were assisted by officers in the exercise of their right to vote. त्यांना मतदानाचा हक्क बजावण्यासाठी अधिकार्‍यांनी मदत केली. There were policemen who maintained perfect order and discipline at the polling stations. पोलिसांनी मतदान केंद्रांवर चोख सुव्यवस्था व शिस्त पाळली.
The polling stopped at 6 pm. and all excitement was over. सायंकाळी ६ वाजता मतदान थांबले आणि सर्व उत्साह संपला.
