Compound words are those that are made up of two whole words that function as a single unit of meaning. There are three different types of compound words.
Closed form - No spaces between the words
Closed words both look and act like individual words.
Two words are joined together to create a new meaning.
Examples : keyboard, makeup, notebook, textbook, vineyard
Open form - Spaces between the words
Open Compound words always act like single words.
Words are open but when read together, a new meaning is formed.
Examples : full moon, real estate, post office, railway station, bus stop
Hyphenated form - Hypens between the words
Words are joined together by a hypen (-)
Examples : mother-in-law, father-in-law, five-year-old
